Sterile techniques and practices create or maintain an area free from pathogenic organisms. Proper sterile asepsis minimizes patient exposure to infection-causing agents and reduces risk for infection. Sterile techniques are common in operating rooms, labor and delivery area, and major diagnostic areas. They can also be used at the bedside.
